Investigating L2 writers’ engagement with a customised GPT for pre-task planning

This talk presents findings on comparing how 14 ESL writers cognitively, behaviourally, and affectively engage with a customised GPT versus the standard GPT in argumentative writing planning. This study goes beyond exploring learners’ uses of GenAI and offers empirical insights on designing GenAI for specialised writing instruction and assessment purposes.

This presentation examines a POSTECH–NUS L2 writing project in which AI-supported revision, intercultural dialogue, and teacher-designed reflection were integrated into news-based writing. By requiring visible drafts, revised versions, and learning statements, the course framed AI as a tool for revision while preserving human judgment, audience awareness, and explicit pedagogical accountability.

Students’ use of GenAI tools in digitally mediated research writing

This study examines how multilingual undergraduates conduct research writing across interconnected digital tools and platforms and use GenAI tools in these processes. Screen recordings of 20 students completing a source-based writing task show frequent cross-platform movement and layered tool use and substantial integration of GenAI tools in the recursive processes. Findings highlight the impact of GenAI and other digital tools on the changing nature of writing and suggest implications for teaching research writing in digital environments.
